Sports Environment Alliance to stage inaugural summit
Sport industry leaders will come together on 8th November at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to discuss the importance of environmental sustainability at the inaugural Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) Summit (#SEASummit).
Formed last year, SEA is a not-for-profit, membership based organisation focused on equipping the sport industry with the knowledge and networks to be environmental stewards.
SEA Chairman Malcolm Speed explains "the mandate for the Sports Environment Alliance is about urging sport to take action now to protect our natural environmental assets.
"This is a future-oriented business decision that sport cannot afford to delay or neglect.
"Without water, energy and materials, we cannot deliver the key parts of our business - participation, entertainment and employment.
"Sports need to move the environment up the agenda (and) SEA is the platform from which we will provide the knowledge to do better and the networks to support active engagement in this movement.”
SEA Executive Director Dr Sheila Nguyen added "sport has the power to influence, and we want to help the sport industry to tackle environmental health from the grassroots up with education and empowerment, and from the top down with elite sport setting the agenda."
Dr Nguyen believes that “environmental leadership is a logical extension of the active involvement that the Australasian sport industry already has with other social and community issues."
Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) General Manager Peter Wearne is confident that the #SEASummit will attract various industries, commenting "as an industry leader and a community-minded club, we are proud to be one of the founding members of the Sports Environment Alliance, as well as the host venue for the #SEASummit 2016.
“We look forward to the #SEASummit and discussing the unique challenges and opportunities this industry faces with other organisations from the sporting community.”
“The MCC has taken great strides in the area of environmental sustainability and we are eager to share our experience and advice, as well as learn from the initiatives and activities that other, like-minded organisations have undertaken.”
Delegates will have the unique opportunity to experience one of three exclusive tours including the behind the scenes eco-tour at the MCG, the Water Recycling Facility also at the MCG or the LEED certified Margaret Court Arena.
Guest speakers at the event include Kate Mee, Masters Swimming Australia - National Greening Committee; Peter Wearne and Cricket Club and Richard Griffiths, Chief Operating Officer, Greater Western Sydney Giants.
