Sport sustainability issues to be discussed at Melbourne SEA Summit

Sport sustainability issues to be discussed at Melbourne SEA Summit
November 13, 2017

Following on from the inaugural summit in 2016, The Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) a one-day summit is dedicated to raising awareness of how the sporting industry can minimise their impact on the environment.

Being held tomorrow (14th November) at the MCG, the second #SEASummit 2017 will be bringing together 19 industry leaders including representatives from sporting associations, governments and sustainability service providers with the aim to inform, share knowledge and build collaborative networks that can enhance the sporting community’s ability to work, play and consume sport more sustainably.

The line-up for the summit includes representatives from Golf Australia, the AFL, Tennis Australia, Surfing Victoria, the National Football League in the USA as well as sustainability ambassadors from Natureworks, Sustainability Victoria, BioPak and Eco Guardians.

During the summit, delegates will have the opportunity to attend one of three site tours including the MCG, Victoria Racing Club or Margaret Court and Rod Laver Arena, where they will gain behind the scenes insights about the eco-efforts implemented at these facilities.

#SEASummit 2017 will feature a key note address from Viviane Fraisse, the Head of Sustainability for the Fédération Française de Tennis (FFT).

Fraisse has driven the sustainability actions of the FFT and the Roland-Garros International Tennis Tournament as well as projects such as Operation Yellow Ball, a campaign to encourage tennis clubs, leagues and players to recycle old tennis balls, which can then be transformed into sports grounds.

Commenting on the Summit, SEA Chairman Malcolm Speed states “sports need to move the environment up the agenda. SEA is the platform from which we will provide the knowledge to do better and the networks to support active engagement in this movement.

“This is a future-orientated business decision that sport cannot afford to delay or neglect. Without water, energy and materials, we cannot deliver the key parts of the business – participation, entertainment and employment.”

Also on the agenda for the summit will be the #SEAChangeSolutions Awards, which recognise and celebrate sustainability efforts demonstrated by clubs, facilities and organising bodies.
