GESAC development a finalist in the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2013
Glen Eira City Council has been named as a finalist in the Premier of Victoria's Sustainability Awards for its development of the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC), which uses best practice environmentally sustainable design (ESD) features.
Sustainability Victoria Chief Executive Stan Krpan congratulated the City of Glen Eira team for their innovative development and said they were an excellent example of leadership in sustainability.
Krpan stated "the GESAC development has been recognised by the awards judges in the Infrastructure and Buildings category for their outstanding contribution to sustainability.
"The vision and innovation shown by all finalists is what makes Victoria an international leader in sustainability."
GESAC uses ESD to ensure efficient operations, whilst delivering long term aquatic, fitness recreation and wellness opportunities.
A multi-purpose facility, GESAC generates a range of positive outcomes by optimising user and operator safety through extensive involvement of industry experts and organisations, and improving environmental performance and operational costs, using ESD features which optimise operations via proven technology.
GESAC is owned and operated by the Glen Eira City Council and is acknowledged as one of Australia's premier aquatic and recreation centres. It was built by Council in partnership with the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments.
Now in their 11th year, the Premier's Sustainability Awards celebrate efficient use of water, resources and energy, better waste management and recycling practices, the enhancement of the environment and effective, practical community action.
Finalists have been chosen in seven categories: Innovative Products or Services, Infrastructure and Buildings, Education, Environmental Protection, Small and Medium Enterprises, Large Business and Community. Winners will be selected from each category.
In addition to these awards, the Premier will personally select two overall winners: the Premier's Recognition Award and the Premier's Regional Recognition Award.
The Premier's Regional Recognition Award will focus on a regional finalist who has demonstrated significant benefit for regional Victoria.
The overall winner will receive the Premiers Recognition Award, which focuses on exemplary leadership and innovation in sustainability. All award winners, whether regional or metropolitan will be eligible for the Premiers Recognition Award.
Winners will be announced at the awards night on Tuesday 22nd October.
GESAC was featured in the May/June 2013 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
