Floating Indian Ocean island to combat rising sea levels
Details of a $500 million floating golf course, conference centre and hotel, planned for the Maldives, have been revealed.
With an average elevation of just two metres above sea level, there are fears many of the Maldives 1,192 islands will soon sink into the Indian Ocean. To counter this, the Government of the Maldives has begun a venture with Dutch Docklands International to build a network of man-made, floating islands of which the golf resort and convention centre is a part.
The islands will be located within reef areas and will be connected by a system of underwater tunnels.
Dutch Docklands and Waterstudio conceived the plan to build the floating islands that will reportedly be carbon neutral and will be attached to the sea floor with cables or mooring piles, so as not to disrupt the sea life.
The islands will be constructed in India or the Middle East, then simply towed to their final destination with the golf course set to open within the next three years.
