August 20, 2013

As part of a range of initiatives aimed at greening the Indian capital, Delhi's Thyagaraj Stadium has earned the distinction of being the first stadium in the country to be awarded with CII-Indian Green Building Council's (IGBC) Gold Rating.

Acknowledging receipt of the CII-IGBC-Gold rating, National Capital Territory of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also praised the Stadium's energy efficiency, water management, waste recycling and waste management, stating that "this remarkable achievement has consolidated Delhi's leadership role in its efforts in creening the country (and) would encourage other states in the country go the greener way."

Designed by architects Peddle Thorp for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Stadium's lighting is provided by solar energy while building-integrated photovoltaic cells allow the stadium to feed electricity to the grid.

Key features incorporated in the Stadium include: 2.5 MW CNG powered turbine to generate electricity, grid interactive 1 MW solar energy, 200 KLD Capacity effluent treatment plant, use of recycled water for flushing and horticulture and glazing with double insulated glass.
