Community spirit lights up Drummoyne Oval
The final stage of the Drummoyne Oval upgrade has been launched, with Federal Minister for Regional Development and Local Government Anthony Albanese joining City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas to "switch on the lights" at the inner western Sydney sportsground.
The highlight of the official launch saw a group of young sports stars put on a spectacle of cricket, rugby and AFL before the official launch.
Mayor Tsirekas explained "it was great to see young players from Drummoyne District Junior Rugby, Drummoyne Power Junior AFL and Concord Briars Cricket Club showcase the sports played at the oval.
"Drummoyne Oval is now one of the best community and sporting facilities in Sydney and I would like to thank all our sporting clubs from across the community for coming along and celebrating the night."
In late 2012, the final stage of the precinct's upgrade was completed with the installation of six broadcast quality lighting towers and improved local lighting on Taplin Park.
The $10 million upgrade was made possible by a Federal Government grant, as well as funding from the NSW Government, Cricket NSW and the City of Canada Bay.
The first stage of the Oval's upgrade was launched in 2010, again by Minister Albanese, who was invited back to officially "switch on the lights" at the beinning of the month.
Mayor Tsirekas added "it was great to see so many families come out and enjoy the night.
"This was a true community event and the Minister was impressed with the community spirit shown."
The Drummoyne Oval Precinct is an important community asset that provides open space and sporting facilities for many different codes.
Local rugby union, AFL and cricket clubs are based at the precinct and Drummoyne Oval has also hosted first class and international level sporting fixtures including a recent Sydney Sixers training match.
The upgrade to the Drummoyne Oval Precinct has been a long-term project made possible by a grant application through the Federal Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.
The upgrade includes:
• Construction of six lighting towers on Drummoyne Oval;
• Construction of four light poles at Taplin Park to provide better lighting for local sporting groups;
• New pedestrian lighting within the precinct to provide improved security for the community;
• Construction of a new community facility and the renovation of the existing club house;
• Installation of a multi-sport electronic scoreboard;
• Repositioning and installation of new turf practice wickets to meet international standards;
• New spectator facilities including the upgrade of the grandstand - named after former rugby player Greg Davis;
• Improved stormwater and sustainable water management systems.
